Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which are reactive compounds produced by the body as a result of exposure to environmental pollutants, toxic chemicals and stress. Free radicals cause damage at the cellular level increasing risk of heart disease, certain cancers, premature aging and stroke. Antioxidant rich foods such as Yerba Mate are believed to reduce these risks.
* Researchers at the University of Illinois studied 25 varieties of yerba mate in 2005. They determined that mate contained higher levels of antioxidants than green tea.
