What is Yerba Mate?

Charles Darwin named yerba mate "the perfect stimulant".

A bit about yerba mate history: yerba mate tea is not a new discovery. South Americans have been in love with it for centuries beginning with the Guarani people who were first to harvest and enjoy yerba mate: the leaves of ilex paraguariensis, an indigenous tree and member of the holly family. Later the gauchos of Argentina adopted it into their rugged life in the Pampas. Today it is a favored brew in country and city alike.

This sensational herb infused hot or cold delivers refreshment, stimulation and a generous dose of antioxidants. And most important: a better buzz than coffee or tea. Yerba mate has been sold primarily as a health drink in the USA which is why you may not have heard of it. South Americans drink it because 1) They like the flavor and 2) for the great way it makes them feel. Mate is an institution in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and parts of Brazil. It's what everyone is drinking at the corner cafe; it's what you drink when you visit old friends or are welcomed by new ones. Maybe it's time to make yerba mate a part of your day, too.

Types of WyndHorse Yerba Mate

WyndHorse Clasico Traditional Style Yerba Mate: Especial, Verde and Fuego, and Orchards Lemon, Orange and Apple

First a bit on "stems" verses "no stems": We sell both styles. Both types of yerba mate are excellent ~ it is really a matter of personal taste and style which you prefer. At WyndHorse we think you should decide. That's why we offer a wide choice of fine yerba mates. Try both styles and see what you prefer: with stems or without. Yerba mate is a personal thing. There are many ways to enjoy it just like fine coffees or other types of tea.

Our Verde and Fuego yerba mate brands are pure leaf or "sin palo". Our mates "sin palo" without stems are the finest quality. Pure leaf mate is just that: just the leaves. This gives a very strong infusion favored by many and also those who like to infuse yerba mate like a tea without gourd and bombilla

Our Especial Yerba Mate is "con palo" which means with stems. Our Orchards fruit yerba mates also have stems. Before you get worried--and this is one of the things you need to know to really know your mate--yerba mate with stems does not mean inferior quality or taste. Quite the contrary, in Argentina where million enjoy yerba mate every day, this is the preferred style. Stems in the mate make it rounder, more full bodied and less bitter. Also the inclusion of stems makes the mate work better with a gourd and bombilla.

Clasico Traditional Yerba Mate Choices

Especial Our Especial is premium yerba mate aged for a minimum of two years to impart a rich full flavor without bitterness. Sabroso!  It is lightly smoked. Especial is "con palo" which means with stems. The stimulating properties are towards the mid to higher range.

Orchards Fruit Yerba Mate ~ Our traditional style yerba mate "con palo" with 100% natural fruit and fruit flavors added. Enjoy our choices of orange, lemon an apple. The stimulating properties of our fruit flavored blends are in the medium range.

Verde and Fuego Pure Leaf Yerba Mate ~ 100% pure leaf yerba mate "sin palo" which means without stems. This is the preferred style in Uruguay and Southern Brazil. Verde is a younger, green leaf mate with a slightly stronger, greener taste than our Especial blend. Fuego blends a lightly smoked Brazilian style leaf yerba mate blended with a hint of green Argentine. The stimulating properties are towards the higher range in both of our pure leaf mates, with Fuego the stronger of the two.

More on Traditional style Yerba Mates: What about the taste?
Some people adore traditional style mate. Others think it tastes to green or bitter. But so many people base this opinion on trying only one kind of yerba mate. This would be like trying one kind of coffee or tea and deciding based on that one experience whether you like all coffees or teas. Also since mate is a different flavor than many North Americans are used to, they may try it once and think.: it's not for me. It's not like something I already like or drink. Well then, remember your first cup of coffee or glass of wine? Bets on that you probably didn't like it. Only after a few tries you thought - not so bad and I like the way it makes me feel.  In time, it begins to taste great.  Yerba mate is no different. Try it and see. Give it the chance and you will begin to love its flavor as much as its uniquely wonderful buzz.

What else is out there? More on Yerba Mate

Where can I find yerba mate? There are South American brands sold in the USA in local markets that specialize in Latin American foods.  They are sold in original packaging with little information on what to do with the product once you buy it.  Mostly they are sold on the shelf without accessories available. You can also buy yerba mate on the web along with accessories. There are many sites some good--and some not--now that yerba mate has begun its inevitable rise to popularity in North America.

You may have to try many yerba mates before you find one or two you like, the same goes for accessories.  Some new drinkers will buy kilos  until they find the right yerba mate.  And there are many accessories: gourds and bombillas ranging form poor quality to fine. It can take time and money to find the style and quality that suits you.

At WyndHorse have done the homework for you and present a line of quality products: delicious yerba mates in traditional Clasico and Santa Fe  styles, fine accessories and complete yerba mate sets all at great prices. We also offer quality packaging and thorough information on the preparation and enjoyment of your new drink. We recommend yo start your yerba mate adventure with a yerba mate set or complete yerba mate kit.

Are there any North American grown yerba mates? All yerba mate is grown in South America and exported, either packaged or in bulk, to yerba mate companies in North America.
At this time the market is young and there have been only few North American mate brands. Usually they offer only one style of yerba mate and can be quite expensive. Many claim their particular yerba mate (whether it has stems or not) is the best and only kind you should drink.
We believe you should have a choice of yerba mate styles and flavors. We offer only the finest quality.

North American Yerba Mate Blends are out there, available mostly in tea bag form in many flavors. We have found (with some exceptions) they do not deliver the bold experience of mate either in taste or stimulant strength. Our WyndHorse Yerba Mate Tea Bags are made from the finest quality yerba mate for a delicious, authentic brew.

Loose leaf Yerba Mate blends are available but tend to be either 1. Extremely pricey and/or 2. Over-sweetened or over-flavored. Our WyndHorse Santa Fe Yerba Mate Coffee and Chocolate Blends are guaranteed delicious, and a great value.
